Droughts, Is God Talking
As you see by the map, their are parts of the U.S. that are in a drought. The entire state of California is in varying degrees of drought. But drought conditions are not limited to the U.S. On drought.gov there is a global drought map that shows all the places dealing with droughts.

There are many explanations for drought conditions and they are reasonable and accepted as the only answer. Droughts cause much suffering not just inconvenience. They cause food and drinking water shortages, animals die, and the dry conditions cause fires to rage out of control quickly. So, people look for ways to control the weather, especially rainfall. But there are still droughts and the suffering is on going. Is mankind truly in charge?
Deuteronomy 10:14 HCSB The heavens, indeed the highest heavens, belong to the Lord your God, as does the earth and everything in it.
Psalm 89:11 HCSB The heavens are Yours; the earth also is Yours. The world and everything in it—You founded them.
1 Corinthians 10:26 HCSB for the earth is the Lord’s, and all that is in it
There are many more verses but these get the point across, everything belongs to God. He owns it all including us.
2 Chronicles 20:6 HCSB ...Yahweh, the God of our ancestors, are You not the God who is in heaven, and do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations? Power and might are in Your hand, and no one can stand against You.
Psalm 103:19 HCSB The Lord has established His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all.
All power and authority belong to God. God has a purpose and plan that no one can alter or stop. This means God controls the weather and His will leads the way including through the decisions of people.
Who Controls The Weather
In Job 37:1-13 God controls and speaks through His creation;
- v3-4) lightening and thunder
- v6) snow, rain, showers and downpours
- v7) severe weather that stops peoples daily work
- v8-9) cold, cold winds, ice
- v11-12) God commands where it will rain and He tells His purpose-
- a) correction
- b) general grace
- c) shows His mercy and loving-kindness
- a) correction
We will look at two of these purposes
Leviticus 26:14-39 tells us how God deals with sin.
Verses 19-20 lays out how God corrects;
1. breaks pride
2. stops the rain
3. Hard work will yield nothing
God Shows Correction To His People
Amos 4:6 HCSB I gave you absolutely nothing to eat in all your cities, a shortage of food in all your communities, yet you did not return to Me. This is the Lord’s declaration. 7 I also withheld the rain from you while there were still three months until harvest. I sent rain on one city but no rain on another. One field received rain while a field with no rain withered.
1 Kings 8:35 HCSB When the skies are shut and there is no rain, because they have sinned against You, and they pray toward this place and praise Your name, and they turn from their sins because You are afflicting them, 36 may You hear in heaven and forgive the sin of Your servants and Your people Israel, so that You may teach them the good way they should walk in. May You send rain on Your land that You gave Your people for an inheritance.
God wants repentance and He will do what it takes for us to face our accountability, our need for Him, and cry out to Him that we need His mercy and grace in our life.
2. Shows His Mercy and Loving-kindness
Acts 14:17 ESV Yet he did not leave himself without witness, for he did good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness.”
There is the blessing of rain by God which shows His kindness and goodness by giving the people a bountiful harvest that satisfies their hearts with gladness.
So, God uses weather to show His loving-kindness and to get our attention through correction. What does He want?
Psalm 107:1 NASB Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
Psalm 147:1 NASB Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God; For it is pleasant and praise is becoming.
We are to praise and worship Him for goodness.
What is Happening Today
Today, just like in Israel's time, the church is full of those saying all is fine and God is love only and He no longer sends judgment. The worshipful fear of the Lord God is all but gone. While there is compromise and complacency in the church, there are signs everywhere that Christ is returning to judge the earth and the birth pains are coming closer and closer together (Matthew 24). God is warning through His creation, are you heeding the warning?
Revelation 22:17 NASB The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost.
