Shake The Dust Off Your Feet

In Matthew 10:14-15, Mark 6:11, and Luke 9:5, 10:10-11 Jesus tells those He is sending out to "shake the dust off their feet."

In reading this I was like WHAT! I had not heard of this and it certainly didn't line up with "everyone is saved". Jesus is Truth and He is Godhead in flesh so He can not lie but what was He saying and does this apply to me.

Luke 9:1 NASB Summoning the Twelve, He gave them power and authority over all the demons, and power to heal diseases. 2 Then He sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

Luke 10:1 NASB After this, the Lord appointed 70 others, and He sent them ahead of Him in pairs to every town and place where He Himself was about to go

Jesus sent the twelve apostles and seventy disciples out. For everyone who is a follower of Christ, He is talking to you. I had no idea what this truly meant so I studied it. I found that God was answering my prayer about those who hear the true gospel of the bible, say they want Jesus in their life, and yet reject what Jesus says. Jesus put this another way,

Matthew 7:6 HCSB Don't give what is holy to dogs or toss your pearls before pigs, or they will trample them with their feet, turn, and tear you to pieces.

First, this is not saying we are able to know who and who will not welcome Christ as their Lord and Savior. We do not choose for ourself to whom we share the Gospel of Christ. We are to merely speak God's Truth and sow the seed (Mark 4:13-20).

Sharing the Good News

Luke 10:9 ESV Heal the sick in it and say to them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.'

This is the good news. These men went out before Jesus to proclaim Him as King and He is coming, we are to proclaim our Lord Jesus Christ is the only way into the kingdom of God and He is coming again. Jesus, the King of kings and Lord of lords, came to seek and save the lost. The good news taught today is absent of why you are lost,

1. God is sovereign over all
2. Sin, judgment, hell
3. The saved are bond-servants (slaves) of their King Messiah and live to honor and glorify Him only.

When the bad news of sin and eternal judgment are absent, why are you seen as lost by God and what did He die to save you from?

Jesus says there are two responses by people:

Matthew 10:11 ESV And whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy in it and stay there until you depart. 12 As you enter the house, greet it. 13 And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.

When we talk to others about Jesus, we first find out who is worthy. This is not worthy as in deserving. It means, we tell others the good news of salvation by God's grace through faith in Christ. If their response is one of welcoming then they are worthy, if their response is one of scorn, rejection, or ignoring they are unworthy. Those who accept and welcome the Truth, Jesus Christ, His peace will be theirs. Those who reject receive a proclamation of judgment.

Matthew 10:14 ESV And if anyone will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town. 15 Truly, I say to you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.

This public declaration of judgment is a last plea to open your eyes and look at your future. Your eternal future:

1. You are under God's judgment
2. You will go to hell
3. In rejecting Jesus Christ, you are rejected by the King

Matthew 10:32 ESV So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, 33 but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.

These are strong words but they come with the desire of God for you to repent and come to Him. God's love and mercy always warns before He sends His judgment. If you are telling others "the kingdom of God is at hand," and they don't listen or follow Jesus instructions then stop talking to those who refuse to listen. That is "don't throw your pearls before swine or holy things to dogs."

You cannot talk someone into being saved!

Ephesians 1:3 ESV Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved

The verse everyone knows but with the warning.

John 3:16 ESV "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God."
