Overcoming Strongholds - Foundation Part 3

Views 116

In stronghold part 1 we learned Believers have an enemy and are at war.

1. Satan, the devil, is the believers enemy
2. What the world offers is our enemy because it will cause us to be the enemy of God
3. Believers flesh is the enemy because it hates and is hostile to the Holy Spirit

In stronghold part 2 we looked at the nature of the believers battle and weapons.

Battle
1. Imagination/arguments/speculation
2. Lofty opinions against God's truth

Weapon
1. God

Now that we know we are at war, have an enemy, and weapons to defeat the enemy why isn't this working?

First we must accept God does not work, move, or answer prayer the way we expect. Through answered prayer salvation came but it was on the death bed. Maturity came but it was through extreme testing, trials, and suffering. Healing came but God's thumb held me down until I could say with a clean and pure heart, not my will but Your will be done. The true stronghold is the lies we hold tight as truth.

Foundation Of Strongholds

In Numbers 13 is a big picture of what the foundation of strongholds looks like. God tells Moses to send a leader from each tribe of the Israelites. He wants them to go and spy out the land God has promised to give them (v1-16).

Numbers 13 - Spies explore Canaan - Scene 01 - 12 spies

The twelve spies were to see:
1. Are the people strong or weak, few or many
2. Is the land good or bad
3. Are the cities camps (vulnerable) or strongholds (able to withstand attacks)
4. Be of good courage

So, the twelve spies went and looked over the people, land, and cities to give a report on their return. (v17-25) Remember these men went to the same place and saw the same things.

Report One
1. The people are strong
2. The cities are strong and large (stronghold)
3. We are not able, the people are stronger than us
4. The people are giants and "we were like grasshoppers in our own sight." (v26-29,31-33)

Report Two
1. Come on we need to go now and take the land
2. "We are well able to overcome it."

Twelve men exact same situation but two completely different viewpoints. Ten saw with the eyes of themself and two saw with the eyes of God. What about the eyes of the people and God? Numbers 14 Peoples response to the reports:

NO FAITH RESPONSE

Report One (v1-4)
1. They cried all night
2. Complained against Moses and Aaron
3. Wanted to return to what they knew
4. Needed a new leader to accommodate them

FAITH RESPONSE

Report Two (v5-10)
Caleb and Joshua tried again to convince the people victory was theirs through God.

1. We saw the land and I'm telling you it is "exceedingly great."
2. God will give us the land
3. Do not rebel against the LORD
4. Do not fear them, the LORD is with us

The peoples response to the second report was to pick up stones to stone them.

ORGINAL STRONGHOLD

Here is the original stronghold given to everyone through the disobedience of Adam:
1. Is God telling the truth, doubt.
2. Fear man not God, death.
3. Complain against God because He does not give what is good.
4. I will do this myself without God, pride.

Two Men Saw Victory

What is different about Caleb and Joshua?

Numbers 14:24 NASB But My servant Caleb, because he has had a different spirit and has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land which he entered, and his descendants shall take possession of it.

Caleb and Joshua (included) did what God said because they had a different spirit which caused them to follow God fully.

Spirit - 7306 - ruach, from word origin ruwach-7307- wind, breath, mind, spirit of heaven; Spirit of God

Ruach can also refer to the will... Caleb had a different spirit from the other spies (Num 14:24) and thus was resolute in his assessment relative to the conquest of the land.by Bible Study Tools (Bakers Evangelical Dictionary)

Caleb and Joshua had within them the determined will to believe what God promised and the courage to act upon it. The importance of the Holy Spirit is clearly seen here and in the New Testament. The evil report was accepted by the people because they were an evil congregation.

Numbers 14:22 NASB Surely all the men who have seen My glory and My signs which I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have put Me to the test these ten times and have not listened to My voice, 23 shall by no means see the land which I swore to their fathers, nor shall any of those who spurned Me see it.

The people had seen the great power of God. They had experienced His grace, mercy, love, and care by meeting their needs. But in there heart all of that wasn't enough. And when push came to shove they pushed against God instead of shoving their flesh under dicispline. The congregation and ten spies had the spirit of this world. They saw things through their thoughts, feelings, and eyes instead of Gods. Caleb and Joshua had the spirit of God which gave them the eyes of faith, strength, and good courage.

Who Overcomes Our Strongholds

Jesus promised the coming of another that will be exactly like Him. When we put our faith in Jesus as the Christ, Son of God we receive a different spirit.

Acts 1:7 NASB He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; 8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth."

Every person who has faith in Jesus Christ has received the Holy Spirit.

Power -1411- strength, power, ability; from 1410-to be capable, strong, and powerful

What we saw in Numbers were those who appeared to have faith and courage but in the end the truth was revealed. From this we see the complete inability of the flesh. We see how fearful and weak we are without the power and strength of the Holy Spirit.

What are the thoughts of this world:

1. Cries in fear
2. Complains against God and blames others
3. The action is to run from where you are and go back to your perceived place of safety
4. Act upon your feelings and thoughts by looking for someone new

Thoughts of believers:

2 Timothy 1:7 AMP For God did not give us a spirit of timidity or cowardice or fear, but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of sound judgment and personal discipline [abilities that result in a calm, well-balanced mind and self-control].

The power of the Holy Spirit in believers gives power, love, calmness, well-balanced mind, discipline, and self control or good judgment.

As believers we choose life because God has equiped us with His power. When we are lead and controlled by the Holy Spirit we are able to choose life. Meaning we are able to walk in the light of His word.

Some days it is easy but other days the choice is second by second. The point is, we are always in a choosing position.

Who are you choosing death (yourself) or life (God)?
