What Is Truth?
John 18:37 ESV 38 Pilate said to him, "What is truth?"
"Pontius Pilat was the Roman governor of Judea from A.D. 26-36, serving under Emperor Tiberius." (gotquestions.org)
In the bible Pontius Pilat is the one who dealt with the religious leaders of the Jews concerning their insistence that Jesus be killed by crucifixion. He was involved in the trials, beatings, and finally giving way to the people by sending Jesus to His death.
That was thousands of years ago and yet the same question is ask today, what is truth?
The worldly and God define truth differently. The world defines truth as:
1. Something is true when it agrees with my or societies reality
2. Something is true if I think or feel it is true
3. Something is true when it can not be changed by my feelings or thoughts
The world which defines truth as relative, is only relative to each individual. In other words people define truth compared to their definition of lie, truth, and what they accept.
Relative - being such only when compared to something else
Antonyms of relative - absolute, complete, perfect, pure (merriam-webster.com)
The worldly see absolute truth as an enemy of their relative truth, because it is.
It is interesting that each generation believes they have discovered a new way to find truth, new way to define truth, and new hidden truths.
Mankind has run from God and absolute truth since the Garden of Eden. Mankind is hostile to the Author and source of truth. There is animosity toward God Who is the authoritative truth.
John MacArthur- Truth is the self-expression of God...the definition of truth flows from God, truth is theological.
Satan's Strategy to Mislead
1 Samuel 15:29 ESV "Also the Glory of Israel will not lie or change His mind; for He is not a man that He should change His mind."
Hebrews 6:18 ESV so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us.
God told Adam not to eat from one tree, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God's grace said, eat from every tree and God's law or command said, do not eat from one tree (Genesis 2:15-17).
Satan said - Did God say, "You shall not eat from any tree of the garden."
Woman said - we can eat from the trees in the garden but not the one in the middle. We can't eat from it or touch it, or we will die (added to God's word).
Satan said - you won't die, but you will be like God and God knows that
Genesis 3:6 ESV So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
Eve took the bait of Satan's lie, ate the fruit, and gave some to her husband. They both disobeyed and immediately experienced fear of God. It was not reverential fear but being afraid. They also experienced shame. Their first act of being their own god was to cover their shame and hide from God. Instead of repenting and receiving forgiveness, they dealt with their fear and shame with blame.
Can We Learn From Genesis
From then until now people live;
1. Afraid of God
2. Invent ways to cover the shame of their sinful heart
3. Look to escape responsibility by blaming others
It is not a long search into man's philosophy and ways of dealing with their lying heart, guilty conscious, and fear of God until you run into relativity in which man is the supreme source of knowledge and truth.
Mankind has been searching for peace, really a return to the garden of Eden, for thousands of years and their intelligence, knowledge, and philosophies have not achieved the goal. Man will never achieve this goal because they are not the source and author of truth.
Isaiah 65:16 ESV so that he who blesses himself in the land shall bless himself by the God of truth, and he who takes an oath in the land shall swear by the God of truth; because the former troubles are forgotten and are hidden from my eyes.
John 14:6 ESV Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Just think Pontius Pilat had the Truth,God,standing in front of him telling the truth. Has or is Truth standing in front of you? Does it confront you, challenge you, stir up the deeply buried guilt?
Next time- the security of absolute truth
